Shopping in the BVI is a bit of an adventure. There are no shopping malls here, and familiar, multinational brand names are few and far between.

What these islands do have are unique Caribbean crafts, surf and beach wear in abundance, jewellery, island gifts and souvenirs.

Be prepared though to go hunting around the many small shops and boutiques scattered across the island if you don’t immediately find what you are looking for.

Road Town, Tortola is the main venue for island shopping in the BVI. There are a few jewellery shops around the cruise ship dock - aimed mainly at big spending cruise ship passengers with dollars burning a hole in their pocket.

Also near the cruise ship dock is the Mill Mall shopping centre, which is home to The British Shop – a popular stop-off for the UK contingent when they are in town.

It stocks everything from Tizer to Tetley tea.

Just around the corner from here you will also find the island’s banks – Banco Popular, First Bank, First Carribbean and Scotia Bank.

Across Waterfront Drive is the old Main Street of Road Town.

It’s an incredibly narrow, winding street that is crammed with small tourist gift boutiques, restaurants, a coffee shop, bakery, book shop, island jewellery stores, interiors shops and more.

It’s well worth a wander down this road, which is quite literally a trip down memory lane, and reminds us all how shopping used to be.

At the Western end of Main Street you’ll stumble on the rear entrance to Pussers Road Town Pub and Store – a good place to stop for a well-earned air conditioning break!
